East Rose Window Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, California
THE ART
The magnificent East Rose Window of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco was inspired by the great poem written by Saint Francis, "Canticle of the Sun." It celebrates not only the diverse beauty of creation, but also humankind's kinship with the natural world.
The largest window in Grace Cathedral, it has 3,765 pieces of thick, faceted glass and was designed and executed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France. He stated, "This window stands testimony to the possibilities of dream and prayer."
THE SACRED SITE
The first Grace Chapel was built during the Gold Rush of 1849. Grace Cathedral had been constructed, but was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906. Today's structure was completed in 1964 and is the third-largest Episcopalian Cathedral in the United States.
