"I've never had to come to a place like this before. My fiancee is outside; she was too embarrassed to come in." This is what a recent Chapel Pantry guest told me. This man has a job and a house, but his hours keep getting cut and he's struggling to make ends meet. After rent, utilities and gas there is nothing left for food. He told me, "I work hard; I don't want to get food like this, but I don't know what else to do."

This man is why we have the Chapel Pantry. This is where your dollars and food donations go. It is a refuge for those who are struggling in this economy; a place to get some groceries and a warm welcome. A recent USDA study found that 49 million Americans are struggling with hunger; a 36% increase from last year. Our own Pantry numbers reflect that increase. In 2009 the Chapel Pantry had a 40% increase from 2008 in people needing food assistance. We served 7,507 individuals, representing 2,281 families. Thanks to your generous donations of food and funds we have been able to keep up with the need. Fundraisers, such as the recent Souper Bowl Sunday spearheaded by ESC youth which raised $470 for the Pantry, are a big help as well.

To help meet the growing need in our community we are expanding the Chapel Pantry in several ways:
- converting part of the closet across from the Pantry to include a new freezer and refrigerator and extra shelf space for food storage
- opening the Pantry on Fridays beginning on March 5th
- partnering with Nimmo United Methodist Church in their Community Garden Project to raise fresh produce for the Pantry
- initiating a "Plant a Row for the Hungry " project with local gardeners
- expand our relationships with local markets to procure donated produce, dairy and dry goods

Would you like to be a part of this growing and dynamic ministry? You can, and here's how:
- choose a job from the new "Volunteer Opportunities" link on the ESC website
- stop by the church any Monday, Wednesday or Saturday morning after 10 a.m. and lend a hand stocking shelves and breaking down boxes
- fill a "Just Bag It" bag with groceries from the list
- donate money as often as you can; make it a monthly commitment
- plant a row in your garden this spring designated for the Chapel Pantry and bring in the bounty
- involve you neighbors in donating to the Chapel Pantry; it's not just for our church, it's for our community

Domestic Mission Trip to Freeman, VA

In July, members of ESC traveled to St. Thomas, our companion church in Freeman, Virginia, to help with their summer Vacation Bible School. The theme, When Kids Join Forces With God, allowed the children to identify heroes of the Bible, as well as every day heroes. Oliver Todd led nature walks, Judy McCready, Suzie Rockwell, and Judy Wyche led a cooking class. Mary Lou Crifasi, Addie Kier, and Kalli Darnell worked with the youngest children on art projects. Marybeth Highton and Cleo Goodwyn presented a slide show for the older participants about Biblical heroes. Computer instruction was led by Nancy Best. Debbie Quam led the adults through Praying in Color. Also helping were Martha Von Schmidt, Linda Todd, Iris Jones, and Gilbert Lucas. ESC's Senior Warden Hank Marriott attended the first day and shared ideas with Iris Jones, Senior Warden at St. Thomas. All preparatory work was led by Dan McCready.

Thanks to book donations by ESC members, a library was also set up in the computer room which can be used by children and adults. The computers were donated last year and are used for adult classes.

2010 Belize Mission

On Friday, July 2nd, Eastern Shore Chapel ‘s 2010 edition of the Belize Mission Trip boarded a morning flight out of ORF and headed to Ambergris Caye, Belize, via Miami and Belize City. From the very beginning our group felt like a TEAM, and as our 8-day adventure rolled on, we worked hard together and truly felt the Spirit in our midst and in the wonderful people of Holy Cross Anglican School. Our team’s membership was: Ellen Deppe (Team Lead), Jim Deppe, Trevor Benante, Carter Sinclair, Emily Sinclair Riggan, Vicki Kirby, Allie Farias, Susan Laurance, Mary Anne Goode, Nicole Berlin, Margaret Short and Hollie Smith.

We jumped right into our work on Saturday with an orientation briefing at Holy Cross Anglican School, a walking tour of the San Mateo community (where the children served by the school live), construction team set-up/ work, and Vacation Bible School set-up. We took a break on Sunday to snorkel at the barrier reef and to charge our batteries for the coming week…and what a week it was!

The Construction Crew, consisting of Carter, Jim, Trevor, and Susan worked hard all week and accomplished a great deal thanks to Carter’s leadership, construction skills, and patience. We built stairs, decking and railing during the first half of our week and then concentrated on assisting with framing and dry wall work for the remainder of the week. Working alongside the resident maintenance and construction staff, some very knowledgeable and dedicated American expat long-term volunteers, and local high schoolers who were HCAS grads, we were blessed with hard work, mutual respect, laughter and progress.

The Vacation Bible School Team, organized and led by Vicki Kirby, worked their VBS magic with 30-40 children in the mornings and then transformed into team of painters and workers each afternoon. The VBS team consisted of Vicki, Ellen, Emily, Allie, Mary Anne, Nicole, Margaret and Hollie. The week was organized around a Noah’s Ark theme and went beautifully; highlighted by numerous fun activities, crafts, dress-up, kites, backpacks, t-shirts and pictures. Beautiful energetic children, a loving Team of young people and adults, and a full measure of the Holy Spirit, combined to create a week that worked out beautifully for all involved.

We are very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from the Eastern Shore Chapel community through the generous contribution of money, supplies, and participation in our fundraising activities prior to the trip. The church not only funded our lunches and water at the work site, but enable us to present Holy Cross Anglican School with the $2,500 project fee as well as a gift of $500 to support a high school scholarship. This was our third consecutive mission trip to Belize, and along the way we have built a strong and enduring relationship with this wonderful and inspiring community. If you are curious about our KAIROS Prison Ministry, there is an easy and accessible way to gather some first-hand information. For the first time ever, two team planning meetings will be held at ESC in the fall. By attending one or both meetings, you will be able to get a sense of exactly what these weekends entail. Attending a meeting does NOT mean that you are committing to anything. But anyone can come and gather information, talk to the men who have participated before and then discern if this ministry might be right for you. Meeting dates are: Saturday, September 11 and Saturday October 2, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. You do NOT have to stay all day. Just come long enough so that you have an idea of what KAIROS is all about. Interested? Call Lee Davis, 679-3249.

Our KAIROS Teams enter Nottoway Correctional Center to share the love of Christ with residents there. The KAIROS weekends are always in May and November. Are you interested in helping do what Jesus has asked us to do (Matthew 25:36) but just a bit uneasy about actually going into prison? There are lots of ways that you can help and all are very much in need;

Prayer – We have a prayer wheel that we take inside and share with the residents. The wheel is broken down in half hour increments covering the whole three and a half days we are on the inside with them. You can sign up for a segment and devote 30 minutes of time to pray for the residents going through the program, all residents that have previously been through the program, the guards and warden, the Chaplain, the team members and their families. It is amazing to see the residents’ reactions when they realize we are constantly being held up in prayer.

Placemats – Brightly colored placemats are a big hit too. Have your Sunday school class use plain white placemats and turn them into precious gifts from children. Use a bible verse, draw an angel, or just write something cute – anything! The residents are often allowed to take these back to their cells as a reminder of the weekend. (No last names, please!)

Posters – At one point in the visit we will hang posters from all over Virginia down the hallway to our meeting room. This is another example of people on the outside caring for the people on the inside.

Cookies – We need cookies and lots of them. Each team member is required to bring a minimum of 100 dozen homemade cookies to share with the residents (and the guards and the warden and the Chaplain). The cookies must meet very specific criteria so please call for details.

This is an amazing ministry. If you would like to learn more about this powerful ministry and how you can be a part of it, please contact Cliff Bateman (467-3603), Scott Vollmer (496-7930), Jim Tansey (495-6173) or Lee Davis (679-3249).
